Mr. Internet
*** Qwest DSL in Grand Island and North Platte ***
We're excited to announce that we now offer DSL in both Grand Island and
North Platte by way of Qwest. We're taking the phone numbers of
interested people to get them okayed (loop-qualified) as candidates for
DSL, and placing orders which will start being filled May 12.
If you sign up for DSL before June 27th, you can get part or all of your
Qwest installation fee waived, and even enjoy six months of free modem
rental.
But that's not all! If you're switching from dial-up to DSL (or if you're
just signing up with us for the first time), we'll apply $39.90 to your
first three months of Internet service.
That's $170 in savings!
You've probably been reading about our DSL offerings over the years. DSL
is true broadband and fast as lightning. It's also cheaper than a second
phone line, and your first line isn't tied up while you're on the
Internet.
It's been frustrating to us not to be able to offer this service
everywhere we have customers, so we're excited when new cities can be
added to our DSL network. We can think of quite a few more we'd like to
add!
Alltel has been offering DSL in both cities for some time now, but to sign
up for Alltel DSL customers have to switch their phone service to an Alltel
business line. Qwest customers will find signing up for DSL less
cumbersome and less expensive now.
To learn more about Qwest DSL, visit
http://www.inetnebr.com/dsl/qwest/
Fill in our online sign-up form, and we'll contact you about the next step
in the process.
*** Translating The World Wide Web with Web Page Translators ***
Ever found a website that looks really interesting, but have been unable
to read it because it was in a different language? Perhaps you get email
from an overseas pen pal partially written in his or her native
language? Ever wanted to search for webpages written in a specific
language? If this is the case then there are some neat web-based tools,
and hidden options to help you out.
First and foremost among these tools is the Babelfish service provided by
the popular search engine AltaVista. Available at
http://babelfish.altavista.com , it's a tool that allows you to translate
a block of text or even translate an entire webpage! It has a variety of
language options to choose from like the basic English -> Spanish and
Spanish -> English, as well as more advanced options like English ->
Japanese or Chinese -> English. They even have a useful keyboard tool
that will allow you to enter in characters not found on standard US
keyboards (e.g. accented letters or Cyrillic characters). Keep in mind
that Babelfish is far from perfect. If you try to translate a
complicated Japanese phrase for instance, you might come out with
something like 'It goes round and round the phosphorus!' Despite its
drawbacks, you can almost always get the gist of the webpage you translate.
For the web designers among you, Babelfish offers some free code that
will allow you to put a small babelfish image on your page. This image
will allow visitors to your page to instantly translate it with the click
of a button.
Another site you can have some multi-language fun with is everybody's
favorite search engine, Google ( http://www.google.com ). From Google's
main page, you can click on the Language Tools option off to the right of
the screen. This will take you to a new page where you can perform
searches for webpages written specifically in a certain language. You
can even search for webpages that are located in specific countries.
Google's main page also offers personalized preferences. You can
actually change the language of the entire Google interface! It has many
options in language ranging from languages like Vietnamese and Arabic to
some languages that do not even exist like Hacker, Klingon, and Pig
Latin.
Hopefully these tools and services will help to enrich your online
experience. Enjoy!

*** The Neverending Battle to Stop Spam ***
Though many of you have heard of (and subscribed to) our spam fighting
services, Postini ( http://www.inebraska.com/postini/ ) and MailAgent
( http://www.inebraska.com/mailagent/ ), we'd like to tell you about
some built-in features of your e-mail program that can help combat
the clutter in your inbox. Most of these programs work by utilizing a
series of rules or filters that you can enter and customize any time.
Mac OS X 10.2 comes with a program called Mail that has a built in
junk mail filter. By default it operates in training mode, highlighting
your unwanted email in brown, but not clearing it from your inbox.
To enable this feature go to 'Mail' on the menu-bar, select 'Junk
Mail', and then check 'Automatic'. This will create a new folder for
mail called 'Junk'. All your junk-mail will go there instead of your
inbox.
For those running windows, here are some steps to take to reduce the
amount of spam that you have to wade through every day.
Outlook Express has a set of rules and filters that can be reasonably
effective at stopping junk mail. They are easy to configure and very
powerful.
To get started, create a mail folder called 'Junk' by going to 'File'
on the menu-bar, selecting 'New', then 'Folder.' Call it 'Junk'.
Now lets create some basic rules.
Go to 'Tools' on the menu bar and select 'Message Rules,' then 'Mail.'
Here we will have a list of any rules you may have already created.
To create a new rule click on 'New.' This will bring up a new window
with several lists.
The first section covers the conditions you want for each rule. The
next box has a list of possible actions that can be taken on the
conditions and the third box lets you set values for the conditions.
In the first list we can choose what to look for. Let's create a word
based filter. Check the box 'Where the Subject line contains specific
words,' then down below select 'Move it to the specified folder'.
In the next box click on the blue text that says 'Contains specific
words.' In the window that comes up enter one word at a time until
you have a list of words that you find offensive. After that is done
click on 'Options' and 'Message matches any of the words below.'
Push all the OKs and you have your first spam-fighting rule set up!
This will help cut down unwanted email from getting into your inbox.

*** Mr. Internet ***
Q. Whenever I try to log into my Postini Message Center, it keeps asking
for my password even though I have always had it saved, or my
bookmark for Postini will not work.
A. Recently some upgrades were made to the Postini Message Center.
Because of this, some pages are slightly different -- different enough
for your web browser to no longer recognize them. To solve this
problem, simply go to https://login.postini.com and enter your email
address and password. Make sure you check the "Remember my Address
and Password" box. This also affects your bookmarks. To fix this, you
need to remake your bookmarks. To do this, simply log in as described
above, and then make new bookmarks for the pages that you want.
Mr. Internet is a regular feature of the INews, and he welcomes questions
of any kind. Just mail them to mrinternet@inebraska.com, and he'll answer
one or two each issue. Those he doesn't use will not necessarily be
answered, and you should still use 'manager' and 'accounts' for regular
business.
