*** Napster ***
More and more users are finding new and innovative ways to enhance their
online entertainment experience. MP3's are a fun way for you to listen to
freely available music from bands that may not have a CD released. An MP3 is
simply a sound file which compresses the song small enough so that you can
download it online, but also has CD quality sound.
Initially, it is hard to find MP3's online to download. This is when Napster
can come in handy.
Napster is a program which you download from http://www.napster.com which
enables you to search for a specific song you want, download it, and listen
to it. Once you search and find the song that you are looking for, you simply
download it and then it appears in your playlist. Other people may upload
songs from your playlist, just as you download from someone else. The basics
of it is that you share your MP3 files with others as they share theirs with
you. Napster also includes its own player so that you don't have to spend
time finding a suitable MP3 player.
Napster has been in the news recently because of a suit brought by
several music companies claiming that Napster is breaching the copyright
laws by unlawfully distributing music. This could be debated back and
forth forever, but only the courts will be able to decide whether or not
Napster is violating any copyright. Napster may not be around much
longer, but for the time being it is a great place to find the mp3's
you're looking for.
Although copyrighted music is sometimes available through the Napster client,
Internet Nebraska in no way condones piracy of musicians' rightful
intellectual property.
You can find out more about Napster at http://www.napster.com and information
about the various pending lawsuits is available at
http://www.riaa.com/piracy/press/041100.htm. An important development in this
case is Napster's stance on the issue. They don't condone music piracy, and
individual Napster users may soon be held legally liable for possessing and
and trading material protected by copyright law.

*** You don't want this virus ***
The VBS/LoveLet-A virus that swept the computer world yesterday was severe,
to be sure. We wrote a lengthy article about it and send it to all our
users, however with the scale and publicity, we thought it would be a good
idea to touch on the main points.
The name of the virus is VBS/LoveLet-A and it affects computers running
Windows 95/98/NT/2000. Macintosh and Linux users are safe. It is
spread via the use of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and through
the mIRC Internet Relay Chat client.
When we were notified of the virus, we quickly worked on our incoming
mail server so it automatically rejected the bulk of the virus messages.
This prevented the proliferation of the virus from slowing down our
server, and also prevented many users from receiving the virus.
A copy of the note we sent yesterday explaining what the virus is and
how to remove it is available at
http://www.inebraska.com/love-let-virus.html and further information
about the virus can be found at http://www.symantec.com.

*** How to make a web page ***
Each Internet Nebraska dialup account comes with space for a free web page,
but many of you might not know how to utilize it.
Unless you have spent countless hours studying HTML it may seem overwhelming.
Not to fear, there are free programs out there that are not only easy, but
even have tutorials that can show you all the neat stuff you can do.
If you have a web page with Internet Nebraska, and would like to
utilize it, you can download one of these great helpers:

*** Mr. Internet ***
Q: When I go to your webpage, and try to change my password it wants me to
have something really hard. Why is this?
A: Good question! Selecting a good password is actually pretty easy if you do
it right. Having a good password that's difficult to guess or crack is of
paramount security when protecting your Internet account. A good password
helps to prevent others from stealing your account and misbehaving on the
Internet while posing as you.
To create a secure, easy to remember password just follow a few simple
steps.
1. Use a minimum length of 6 characters.
2. Use both letters and numbers in your password.
3. Use a mixture of upper and lower case letters.
An example, John Doe has to choose a password so he uses 'Jd37baLL'. It's
easy for him to remember. His initials are jd, he's 37 years old, and he
coaches basketball.
Mr. Internet is a regular feature of the INews, and he welcomes questions
of any kind. Just mail them to mrinternet@inebraska.com, and he'll answer
one or two each issue. Those he doesn't use will not necessarily be
answered, and you should still use 'manager' and 'accounts' for regular
business.
