*** Mr Internet Explains the Rebate Game ***
Q: I've seen many places that are offering large rebates when you buy
a computer and sign up for 3 years with their Internet service. What's
the catch?
A: The catch is that you're locking yourself into a 3 year contract in an
industry that's changing faster than any other in history. The contracts
for those services are for modem-speed access, but already more and more
people are moving to higher speed ways to access the Internet. ADSL is
already here, becoming available to more and more areas all the time, and
faster Internet access methods are already on the horizon.
Plus, many of the services offering these access rebates only offer access
in a select few large cities, meaning that those customers in small towns
can't take advantage of these offers.
Finally, Mr Internet cautions you that not all of the providers offering
these promotions are known for particularly good service. Mr Internet
hasn't read the contracts involved, but he'd bet his hairpiece that there's
no provision for getting out of the contract on account of poor service.
I'm not saying that you're going to get poor service, but if you do, you're
locked into it, and 3 years is a _long_ time. :)

Mr. Internet is a regular feature of the INews, and he welcomes questions
of any kind. Just mail them to mrinternet@inebraska.com, and he'll answer
one or two each issue. Those he doesn't use will not necessarily be
answered, and you should still use 'manager' and 'accounts' for regular
business.

Thanks Lily, we'll take it under advisement.

News about News: No backpacks or lockers are
being allowed at a Deltona (Florida) school
as a safety precaution.
Melissa: Those rules are ludicrous! My school
has never let use carry bookbags, but we are
allowed to use lockers. If they want to
protect the school, they should get a metal
detector and security camera! 08.13.99

other kids think about this rule, and tell
everyone what *you* think.
